The Beauty of Moments: Cherishing Parent-Child Connections in College

I saw this on FaceBook this morning and wanted to share…

My 81-year old mother reminded me the other night that I used to call her once a week when I was at college–on Sunday evenings because that was when long-distance rates were the cheapest.

“Did it bother you that you couldn’t talk to me very much?” I asked her.

“It killed me, but money was tight, and I looked forward to Sunday night more than anything. I just wanted to hear your voice and know you were okay for another week,” she told me. “Sometimes it was easier because I didn’t know what you were up to so I didn’t worry as much, but most of the time, I just wanted to know you were happy and doing well.”

In today’s world, it feels unnatural to think we can only get in touch with someone once a week, but there is some truth to what my mom is saying. Just because we have a variety of ways to access our big kids doesn’t always mean we should use them.

That’s why when I walked into our home office and saw my husband facetiming with my daughter at college before they did their Fantasy Football draft, I got a little choked up. I sat behind them, just listening to them chat and laugh and share some funny stories. It felt good to know she was happy. It felt good to know she was okay.

My twin daughters are starting to get in the groove of college life. Classes are in full swing, their activities are meeting regularly, and their social lives are developing.

I talked to one of my daughters yesterday (Tuesday), and as she was getting off the phone with me, she casually said, “I’ll call you on Friday after I talk to the trainer.”

And, of course, I responded with: “Friday! That’s four days from now!”

Then I remembered that she is out there living her life, which is exactly what she is supposed to be doing. So I took a deep breath and bravely said, “Friday. That sounds great. I’ll talk to you then.”

I miss seeing my daughters’ faces each day, hearing their laughter, listening to their stories, and feeling their arms around me for a hug.

I’m grateful I get to stay connected to them in a variety of ways beyond one Sunday night phone call.

But I’m also trying to give them some space to grow and learn how to live life outside of my home. It may be more challenging for me than it is for them.

At this point, I’ll take whatever connection they are willing to give me. It might be a meme or a text asking for a password or a Facetime or even a Sunday night phone call.

Any opportunity I get to know they are okay is enough right now.

I’m still learning how to do this letting go thing.

This is truly loving hard.

Hugs.

A Story of Priorities and a Jar…Tips for Squeezing More into Your Life

The following story is one that’s been circulating for a while. I believe it holds a very important message regarding appropriately setting priorities in our lives.

A professor of philosophy stood before his class with some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about two inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was full. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly and watched as the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The professor then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They chuckled and agreed that it was indeed full this time. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled the remaining open areas of the jar.“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar signifies your life. The rocks are the truly important things, such as family, health, and relationships.

If all else was lost and only the rocks remained, your life would still be meaningful. The pebbles are the other things that matter in your life, such as work or school. The sand signifies remaining “small stuff” and material possessions. If you put sand into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks or the pebbles. The same can be applied to your lives.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are truly important. Pay attention to the things in life that are critical to your happiness and well-being. Take time to get medical checkups, play with your children, go for a run, and write your grandmother a letter. Take care of the rocks first – things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just pebbles and sand.

Timing: The Unpredictable Joker of Life

Ah, timing – that unpredictable element that often catches us off guard. It has a knack for arriving when we least expect or desire it. In the grand comedy of existence, timing is the mischievous joker, indifferent to our plans and preferences.

The Alarm Clock Surprise: Ever set your alarm for a perfect 8:00 AM only to be rudely awakened by its blaring at 6:30 AM? Timing’s idea of a jest, right? It laughs as you groggily stumble out of bed.

Traffic’s Unexpected Appearance: You’re running late for that important meeting, and suddenly, traffic decides to make an appearance. Thanks, timing! Your carefully planned commute turns into a chaotic ordeal.

Love’s Quirky Dance: Timing has its own unique sense of romance. It might introduce you to the love of your life when you least expect it or disappear when you’re eager for a connection.

Cooking Adventures: In the kitchen, timing’s antics are legendary. Burnt toast, overcooked pasta, and underdone steaks – it revels in culinary mishaps.

The Perfect Comedic Moment: In conversations, timing is the master of delivering punchlines. It waits for that quiet instant and then delivers the funniest remark, often leaving you in fits of laughter.

The Unforeseen Plot Twist: Just when you think you’ve understood life’s narrative, timing introduces an unexpected twist that keeps you intrigued.

But amidst all the unpredictability and amusement, timing imparts a valuable lesson – to embrace life’s surprises. It reminds us that some of the best moments are the ones we never anticipated.

So, let’s raise a toast to timing, our unpredictable companion on this exciting journey called life. It may not wait for us, but it certainly knows how to keep things captivating! 🎉⏰ #TimingHumor #LifeSurprises #EmbraceTheUnpredictable

A Lifesaving Lesson: The Power of Support When You’re Underwater

In the heat of competition at the World Championships in Budapest, a heart-stopping incident unfolded that serves as a powerful metaphor for life’s struggles and the importance of a strong support network. Anita Alvarez, a swimmer representing the USA, found herself sinking to the bottom of the pool. In a twist of fate, her coach Andrea Fuentes, ever vigilant, spotted her absence and reacted without hesitation. Fully clothed, Fuentes dove in and rescued Alvarez from the depths, pulling her to safety.

This act of heroism is a poignant reminder of the individuals we all need in our lives – the ones who notice when we’re sinking, who dive in without a second thought, and who bring us back to the surface when we’ve lost the strength to swim. It prompts us to reflect on who those people are in our own lives – the ones we can count on to be there during our darkest moments.

It’s also a call to action – a reminder that we, too, can be someone’s lifeline. We can strive to be the person who notices when someone is struggling, who reaches out without hesitation, and who provides unwavering support. In a world that often feels turbulent and overwhelming, having a support system can make all the difference. Let’s be that beacon of hope for someone, just as Anita’s coach was for her. #SupportMatters #LifesavingSupport

The Cup of Life: What Spills When You’re Shaken

Life often serves as the great equalizer, throwing unexpected challenges and disruptions our way. Just like the familiar scenario of holding a cup of coffee, we find ourselves holding the cup of life, and the inevitable bumps and jostles will cause its contents to spill. But have you ever pondered why you spill what you do?

Let’s delve into an enlightening analogy that sheds light on our reactions during life’s unpredictable moments. Imagine clutching a cup of coffee, when suddenly someone collides with you, causing the coffee to splatter everywhere. If your immediate response to why you spilled the coffee is, “Because someone bumped into me!” – you’re in for a twist.

The truth is, you spilled the coffee not solely because of the collision, but because coffee was in your cup. Had it been tea, tea would have spilled. The crux of the matter is that whatever resides within the cup is what will inevitably spill out when life rattles you.

So, when the inevitable upheavals occur, what spills over from you? Is it an overflow of joy, gratitude, peace, and humility? Or do anger, bitterness, victim mentality, and tendencies to give up taint your reactions?

Life hands us the cup – it’s our choice what we pour into it. When the going gets tough, what do you want to see overflow? Let’s strive to fill our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, affirming words, resilience, positivity, and most importantly, kindness, gentleness, and love for others.

As wisely quoted by Austin Tang, the source of this analogy, let’s consciously work towards embracing virtues that truly nourish our souls and color our interactions with the world. Remember, life will shake us, but the contents we’ve chosen will define the art that spills from within us.

Grateful for Everything. Entitled to Nothing.

This mantra serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of humility and gratitude in a world often characterized by expectations and entitlements.

Alex, a young professional, had always dreamt of landing a high-paying job right out of college. He had the education and skills, and he expected success to come effortlessly. However, life had a different plan. After numerous rejections, he found himself working an entry-level job unrelated to his field.

Initially frustrated and disappointed, Alex’s perspective shifted when he adopted the “Grateful for Everything. Entitled to Nothing.” mindset. He began to appreciate the opportunities before him, the chance to learn new skills, and the value of hard work. This change in attitude not only improved his performance at work but also transformed his interactions with colleagues and friends.

Alex’s journey highlights that entitlement can breed discontent, while gratitude paves the way for genuine fulfillment. By recognizing that we are not owed success or privileges, we open ourselves to appreciating even the smallest blessings. Every experience, whether positive or challenging, contributes to our growth and understanding.

Embracing gratitude and humility can be a game-changer. “Grateful for Everything. Entitled to Nothing.” is more than a mantra; it’s a call to reevaluate our expectations, appreciate our present circumstances, and approach life with an open heart.

Making Sense of Housing Trends: A Look into the Real Estate Scene

People always ask, “How’s the market” Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Lately, home prices have been a bit up and down. For around seven weeks, prices stayed the same as last year’s or even went down a little. But here’s the twist – just this week, they went up a tiny bit! It’s like achieving a new high score in your favorite game – a small but exciting victory.

Good news is showing up in the economy and housing market. More homes are getting sold, and the economy is growing. This growth might cause interest rates to go up a bit, including those for mortgages. If you’re thinking about buying a house in the future, it’s smart to keep an eye on these rates.

Even though things seem better, the housing market is still getting back on track. The total number of homes sold this year might be the lowest in over a decade. That’s because people are being cautious about buying, and there aren’t as many homes up for sale. It’s kind of like solving a puzzle – lots of people want homes, but there aren’t enough available. This makes things a bit tricky.

Remember, homes have been taking a little more time to sell compared to before. But the good news is, they’re starting to sell faster again. This means homes might start getting off the market sooner.

So, there you have it – a quick glimpse into the world of housing trends. Just like in life, things can go up, down, and sometimes surprise us. Whether you’re dreaming about your future home or just curious about the world around you, understanding these trends can help you stay in the loop.

Embracing Decision-Making: A Path to Empowerment and Growth

In the journey of life, decisions shape our experiences and define our paths. It’s natural to seek clarity and reassurance, especially when faced with choices that may impact our future. While the idea of making decisions can sometimes be daunting, it holds the key to empowerment and personal growth. The significance of embracing decision-making and the freedom it offers to explore new horizons.

The Nature of Decisions:

Decisions are the crossroads where our aspirations meet reality. Each choice we make is a reflection of our desires, values, and intentions. Whether big or small, decisions shape the course of our lives. However, the process of decision-making is often clouded by uncertainty and fear of making the wrong choice.

Empowerment Through Choices:

The power of decisions lies not only in their outcome but in the process itself. Making decisions empowers us to take control of our lives, guiding us toward our goals and dreams. Every decision is an opportunity to align our actions with our aspirations, propelling us forward on our chosen path.

The Fear of Mistakes:

It’s natural to fear making mistakes or choosing a path that leads to unforeseen challenges. However, every decision is a learning experience, whether the outcome is favorable or not. The fear of making the wrong choice can hinder progress and stifle growth. Embracing the mindset that decisions are stepping stones, not permanent destinations, allows us to move forward with confidence.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset:

A positive mindset toward decision-making involves acknowledging that no choice is set in stone. The idea that we can always make another decision empowers us to take calculated risks, explore new opportunities, and learn from our experiences. This outlook fosters resilience and encourages us to approach decisions with curiosity and enthusiasm.

That’s My Definition of Success

I stumbled upon a fantastic article written by Marc Randolph, the Co-Founder of Netflix, the other day. I highly recommend giving it a read!

“That’s my definition of success”. Marc Randolph

“I’ve worked hard, for my entire career, to keep my life balanced with my job. In my book, I write about my Tuesday date nights with my wife. For over thirty years, I had a hard cut-off on Tuesdays. Rain or shine, I left at exactly 5 pm and spent the evening with my best friend. We would go to a movie, have dinner, or just go window-shopping downtown together.

Nothing got in the way of that. No meeting, no conference call, no last-minute question or request. If you had something to say to me on Tuesday afternoon at 4:55, you had better say it on the way to the parking lot. If there was a crisis, we are going to wrap it up by 5:00.

Those Tuesday nights kept me sane. And they put the rest of my work in perspective.

I resolved a long time ago to not be one of those entrepreneurs on their 7th startup and their 7th wife. In fact, the thing I’m most proud of in my life is not the companies I started, it’s the fact that I was able to start them while staying married to the same woman; having my kids grow up knowing me and (best as I can tell) liking me, and being able to spend time pursuing the other passions in my life.

That’s my definition of success.”
